About GMRSWise: Who We Are and How We Work

What GMRSWise is, where our radio rules, specs and prices come from, what we do not claim, and how the site makes money without selling recommendations.

About GMRSWise: Who We Are and How We Work
The short answer GMRSWise is an independent US guide to GMRS and two-way radio. Rules come from the FCC text (47 CFR Part 95), specs and certification from manufacturer sheets and FCC ID records, and range from a published propagation model. We do not field-test radios, and affiliate commissions never decide a pick.

GMRSWise exists because most answers about two-way radio come from the companies selling the radios. The box says “up to 36 miles”, the brand blog says the license is simple, and nobody tells you which channel you are allowed to use at what power. This site answers those questions with the rule text, the spec sheet and the math shown.

What is GMRSWise?

GMRSWise is an independent editorial site for US families, off-roaders, hikers, hunters and preppers choosing two-way radios. We cover GMRS and FRS handhelds, mobile and base radios, the FCC GMRS license, channels and privacy codes, antennas, repeaters, the GMRS versus ham radio decision, and how far a radio really reaches.

The GMRS radio guide is the place to start. If you already know you want a radio, go to the best GMRS radios comparison, and if you need the license, the GMRS license walkthrough covers every screen.

Where do our numbers come from?

Rules: the current text of 47 CFR Part 95 (Subpart B for FRS, Subpart E for GMRS) on eCFR, cited by section number. We quote the rule and point to it; we do not give legal advice beyond it.

Certification: whether a radio may legally transmit on GMRS or FRS depends on its FCC equipment authorization. We look up the FCC ID for each radio we recommend.

Specs and prices: manufacturer spec sheets and major US retailer listings. Prices are in US dollars and carry the month they were checked, because they move.

Range: the walkie-talkie range calculator uses the radio horizon formula and the Egli propagation model, with every assumption listed on the page.

What we do not claim

We do not field-test radios, and we will not write “tested” or “hands-on” about a radio we compared on paper. Our recommendations are spec, certification and price comparisons, and each one says who it is not for. Bylines belong to the GMRSWise editorial team; we do not invent reviewers or claim call signs as credentials.

GMRS is a US service. Readers outside the US should treat our radio rules as US-only and check their own regulator before transmitting.

How the site makes money

Reader support: some links are affiliate links that pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. Picks are chosen before affiliate status is checked, and plenty of them earn us nothing. The full policy is in the affiliate disclosure.

Corrections and requests

Radio rules, firmware and prices change. If a channel limit, a certification status or a price on this site does not match what you see, tell us and we will check it against the source and update the page with the date.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what readers ask us most

Is GMRSWise affiliated with the FCC or any radio brand?

No. GMRSWise is independent. We are not part of the FCC, Midland, Motorola, Baofeng, Rocky Talkie, Wouxun or any retailer. Where radios differ, we describe the differences and name the trade-offs.

Did GMRSWise field-test the radios it recommends?

No. Our picks compare published specs, FCC certification records, prices and documented owner feedback. Range figures come from our calculator model or a cited source, never from an invented test.

Does GMRSWise cover radio rules outside the United States?

Only to point you to the right service. GMRS is a US FCC service. Europe and many other countries use PMR446 instead, and each country's telecom regulator sets the local rules.

How does GMRSWise make money?

Some product links earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you, disclosed wherever it applies. Commissions never decide a recommendation.
